Inlay & OnlayAn Overview
A dental inlay or onlay is a commonly used procedure for treating moderate to advanced tooth decay, tooth damage and other cosmetic dental concerns. An inlay or onlay can effectively restore tooth decay, tooth cracks, or breaks that cover a large surface area or occur in the ridges of the tooth’s crown. The inlay or onlay is custom designed for a snug and comfortable fit. Made from high-quality dental ceramic, the inlay or onlay is color matched to the natural teeth for a seamless and beautiful smile.
For patients with moderate to severe tooth decay, an inlay or onlay may restore the natural tooth and prevent the need for tooth extraction. Regular visits to the dentist and preventive dental care can help catch cavities early for effective, conservative treatment.
Benefits of Inlays & Onlays

Inlay Vs. Onlay
- Inlay- An inlay is used to repair decay or damage in the cusp of the tooth crown. The inlay is designed to snugly fit inside the cusp of a tooth. The inlay permanently adheres to a cleaned tooth for a lasting dental restoration. Inlays are custom fabricated from high-quality professional grade resin and are color matched to the tooth for an aesthetic result.
- Onlay- Onlays are also made from professional grade ceramic resin and color matched to your natural tooth. The onlay is used on the surface of the tooth and can repair larger areas of decay. An onlay is more conservative than a dental crown and is often considered a partial crown.
