Periodontal TherapyAn Overview

Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults but can be largely avoided with diligent oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist, and bi-annual dental cleanings. Our team at Union Square Dental Group offers personalized dental care that can address your unique risk factors for gum disease.

Gum disease is a progressive disease that can damage the integrity of the health and function of the smile. Harmful bacteria in the mouth feed off of tartar and plaque build up and multiply, spreading throughout the mouth. The bacteria will eventually grow in pockets deep inside the gum line. As the bacteria spread, the gum line can separate from the teeth and begin to recede, leaving tooth roots exposed and the teeth can become susceptible to extreme sensitivity and even loss.

Gum disease can cause damage beyond just to your teeth and gums. Left untreated, gum disease causing bacteria can even spread to the blood stream and has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, diabetes, and strokes. Early diagnosis, effective treatment and diligent at home oral hygiene are essential to avoid the progression of periodontal disease.
