Root CanalAn Overview
Root canals are an effective and conservative dental procedure for the treatment of advanced tooth decay or a severely damaged tooth. Left untreated, the decay causing bacteria can spread into the inner pulp of the tooth. The infected tooth can become painful. Early diagnosis and treatment can help patients avoid the need for a tooth extraction.
Your dentist will recommend a root canal whenever possible to help retain the natural bite and jaw structure. Root canals are preferred to tooth extraction for their long term oral health benefits.
Root canals are a routine procedure and often are no more painful than a standard dental filling. Many patients even experience a relief from pain after treatment. Pain often associated with the root canal treatment is usually caused by the infected tooth. Inflamed tooth pulp can be extremely sensitive and painful. The root canal procedure removes this diseased tissue allowing the gums and tooth to heal. The root canal procedure can be completed in one visit to our San Francisco dentist office.

Root Canal What to Expect
Using local anesthetic, we ensure our patients are comfortable and relaxed prior to treatment. Our San Francisco dental care team will ensure that every patient is fully informed of the root canal process and have everything they need for a successful treatment. We offer a range of sedation dentistry options for patients with dental anxiety. Sedation options can be discussed during your dental consultation and administered on the day of treatment.
A tiny hole will be drilled into the back of the diseased tooth. Using a special scraping tool, the infected pulp is removed from inside the tooth. The infected pulp is fully removed and the tooth is cleaned and prepared for a filling. A biocompatible material is used to fill the empty and clean space to help support the structure of the tooth.
For many patients, a dental crown may be required to secure the integrity of the tooth. A dental crown will be custom designed and fabricated to snugly fit over your natural tooth. We offer same day dental crowns using CEREC technology. CEREC uses digital imaging and an in house milling machine to design, fabricate and fit a dental crown in about just one hour.
