Tooth ExtractionsAn Overview
Tooth extractions are used to remove teeth that are compromising the overall oral health of a patient. Common dental concerns that require a tooth extraction are advanced tooth decay, root canal infections, or overcrowding of teeth. San Francisco dentists of the Union Square Dental Group use tooth extractions as a last resort option in an effort to provide conservative dental care with minimal impact to promote optimal oral health. For patients that require a tooth extraction, we also provide missing tooth replacement options including dental implants.
Tooth extractions cause minimal discomfort. For anyone who experiences anxiety or fear of the dentist, we also offer sedation dentistry options like nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Most patients only require a local anesthetic for their maximum comfort.

Tooth Extractions What to Expect
Using local anesthetic, or sedation dentistry, you will be made comfortable and relaxed. Once you are settled and numb, your dentist will begin the tooth removal procedure. The tooth will be dislodged from the root. The tooth will be wiggled back and forth and gently taken out of the root socket. Once removed the empty root socket will be thoroughly cleaned, filled, and sealed. Sutures may be necessary to prevent infection and promote natural healing. Generally, patients make a full recovery in a few days.
If patients plan to receive a dental implant to replace their missing tooth, your dentist and our in house periodontist will collaborate to restore function and deliver a highly esthetic implant crowns and bridges. For some patients, All-on-Four may be appropriate. In this case, the tooth extraction, implant placement, and dental restoration may be able to be completed in one visit to our dentist office. For other implant procedure, the extraction site may need to heal prior to the implant procedure.
Your dentist will discuss proper aftercare procedures to minimize swelling and reduce the risk of infection. Patients generally recover in a few short days without any complications. If you experience excessive bleeding at home, be sure to contact your dentist as soon as possible.
